Network hopes ...
Network hopes its Foxy popstar
Idols will give Seven's rugger buggers a good mauling
10 April 2003
By Jane Schulze, The Australian
TEN Network is hoping to replicate the success of US Fox
TV's American Idol with the launch of Australian
Idol in the second half of this year.
The Australian has learned that Ten has secured
the Australian rights to the format from Fremantle Media,
part of the Grundy organisation. American Idol
is similar to Popstars, which aired on the Seven
Network and launched now defunct group Bardot.
It was created by local production group Screentime, which
sold the format to New Zealand and the UK.
Fremantle created American Idol, which became one
of the driving forces behind the ratings revival of Fox
(owned by The Australian's publisher, News Corp).
One of the main differences between the two programs is
that American Idol has more live performances from
its would-be stars than Popstars.
Ten TV chief John McAlpine yesterday alluded to a "new
project" being developed for the second half of the
year, but he gave no details.
The program is expected to be broadcast while Seven shows
the Rugby World Cup.
The judging panel consist of singer Marcia Hines, former singer
and now writer and producer Mark Holden and BMG record label
representative Ian Dickson.
